Boston loses two legends in two months!
Earlier this year the Boston Red Sox made a trade deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers trading a key component of their offense, Mookie Betts. The New England Patriots also lost their star quarterback, Tom Brady. Boston loses two legends in two months!
Tom Brady is a Boston hero! Rumors were flying around for months about Brady departing the Patriots. On March 17th he made it official and announced he would not be returning. Days later, Tom Brady officially joined the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. While many support his decision (at least he didn’t retire) fans are still shocked and confused! Tampa fans must be ecstatic knowing that one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time is officially joining their team.
Tom Brady is not only an NFL legend, but also a Boston icon. Dare we say he’s the Goat? Patriot’s fans are going nuts; he was with the team for twenty years, played in nine Super bowls, and won six of them! The NFL world expected him to remain a loyal New England Patriot until he bowed out, at the end of his career.
The media personality Bill Simon’s shared how he feels about Tom Brady’s leaving Boston during a segment on Fox Sports Radio show “The Herd”.
“Why now? It’s been 20 years,” Simmons exclaimed. “You have a chance to have one of the all-time iconic drafted by a team finish your career with a team thing…
“You’re going to go to Tampa? You’re going to play for Bruce Arians? You’re going to have a bunch of 75-year-olds in the stands and a team with no history? Like, how do you do this? How is this how your career ends? I just don’t get it. I’m confused,” Simmons said.
So what are the details on Brady’s new contract? Brady’s deal will be for two years worth $50 million. His deal is fully guaranteed with an additional $9 million in potential incentives. Earlier this week, Brady officially moved down to Tampa Bay and is currently renting Derek Jeter’s waterfront 30,000 square foot mansion.
What about his age, is he slowing down? Tom Brady is turning 43 this August, and he’ll be the oldest NFL player on a roster. His new coach Clyde Christensen says he’s watched all of Tom Brady’s throws for the past four years and he can’t spot a drop off in accuracy or arm strength.
“I watched every throw of his for four years and couldn’t see any drop off whatsoever. Anyone who says that he can’t [throw the ball] – just is talking. They haven’t watched the film. He makes every throw.”
What does Brady have to say about this new chapter in life?
“Excited, humble and hungry …if there is one thing I have learned about football, it’s that nobody cares what you did last year or the year before that…you earn the trust and respect of those around through your commitment every single day,” Brady wrote on Friday. “I’m starting a new football journey and thankful for the Buccaneers for giving me an opportunity to do what I love to do.”
Last week we wrote about Mookie Betts. Two months ago this star left Boston in search of a bigger payday! Mookie Betts signed to the Los Angles Dodgers earlier this year in his final year of Arbitration to a record breaking one year $27 million year. He’s already made a fortune, earning close to $60 million total in his career. He’ll be seeking a colossal contract, in the $400 million range.
With the Coronavirus Pandemic suspending all Major US Sports Leagues, the Dodgers have yet to capitalize on their trade deal with Mookie Betts. Signing a one-year deal, he’ll officially be a free agent in 2021. Whether he’ll remain loyal to the Dodgers is something will need to wait to see. But, money talks and Mookie has been chasing it. If the LA Dodgers are able to offer a lucrative extension, they should have no problem retaining him.
Take a look at some of these Tweets that have been trending on Twitter. Goodbye Brady, Goodbye Mookie.
